Naming of the Baby

Some interesting pointers (or not) for when your band is deciding its make-it-or-break-it name. (If you ask me, "???!" and also "?").

Reasons for Band names

Beastie Boys - Beastie wants to say animalesco. However the name of this band (Beastie) means: “Boys Entering Anarchistic States Toward Internal Excellence”.

Blink-182 - They wanted to call Blink but already she had an Irish band with this name. 182 are number it of times that Al Pacino says the word “f**k” in the film “Scarface”.

Bloodhound Gang - Name of a satirical picture of televising program “3210 Contact”.

(My favorite)
Chumbawamba - In a dream, a member of the band wanted to go to the house-of-bath but in the doors of the same, instead of Men and Women it was written Chumba and Wamba.

DMX - DM is “Dark Man”. X is probably a referencia Malcom X.

Elton John - Taken off of the musicians Elton Dean and John Baldry. Its true name is Reginald Dwight.

Green Day - One is about a reference to the grass (cannabis). One day green is one day where if it leaves to make the habitual obligations to be only to smoke it. Also quoted as inspiration, a plate in the film “Soilent Verde” written “Green Day”. The band called Sweet Children.

Guns N'Roses - Taken off of the names of Tracii Guns and Axl Rose or of its respective bands, LA Guns and Hollywood Roses.

Limp Bizkit - the name Limp Bizkit appeared during a colloquy between the vocalista Fred Durst and a friend whom that said its brain seemed one “limp biscuit” (a amolecida big cookie). It liked the idea and adoptou the name.

Linkin Park - the band called “Hybrid Theory”, changed the name for “Linkin Park” for legal questions therefore already existed another band with this name. They had chosen this name because the Chester Bennington (vocalista) regularly passed for the Lincon Park in Mónica Saint (that it was a place where the without-shelter costumavam to go) and this name gained the attention of all for its good noise. They had changed some coisinha in the name because thus they could buy the domain therefore linconpark.com was very expensive.

Marilyn Manson - the junction of the names Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. Two opposing celebrities of fame extremamete.

Metallica - Lars Ulrich helped a friend to arrange the name for a Magazine Metal. One of the suggestions was Metallica that was not used to advantage for the magazine. Lars then caught in it for it.

Nickleback - Mike Kroeger (stock exchange operator) was who baptized the band with the name of Nickelback. It worked in a coffee of Vancouver, where the coffee cost $1.95 had that to always say “here's your nickel back”. Of in such a way repeating this, in the hour that they had asked for suggestion of the name of the band, Mike said “Nickelback soon” and all had approved.
Oasis - It is the name of a porting center in Swindon, England.

Offspring - They had taken off the name of film B “The Offspring - They Were Born You the Kill” (the Decendentes - They Had been born To kill).

P.O.D. - Abbreviation of “Payable on Death”. Word used technique in the banks. It wants to say that when a person dies somebody she goes to inherit its money.

Pearl Jam - One of the probable origins of the name Pearl Jam it has to see with a geleia (they jam in English) done for the grandmother of Eddie Veder (called Pearl). Other versions inform that Pearl Jam would be slang, meaning sperm. They had almost called themselves “Mookie Blaylock” in homage to a player of basquete.

Pet Shop Boys - English Slang for homosexuals.

Prodigy - Taken off of the Moog Prodigy, first sintetizador of Liam Howlett.

Ramones - the Beatle Paul McCartney used the pseudonym Paul Ramone during the first excursion of the Beatles to the Escócia. The band took off of it the last name.

Savage Garden - Taken off of a book of Ann Rice.

Sex Pistols - the name of the band was based on the name of the store of Malcolm McLaren (Sex). It is also a connotation for the pénis.

Skunk Anansie - Anansie is a pertaining creature to the Jamaicano folklore. It would be half man, way spider. Skunk is opossum. A species of cannabis geneticamente modified in laboratory exists and of I smell well accented that it takes care of for this name.

Soulfly - Soul Flies. Max Cavelera homaged its deceased godson.

System Of the Down - the name comes of a poem of the guitarist, Daron, called Victims Of the Down. System was chosen by being a stronger word.
